Fire Prevention

Wikipedia defines Fire Prevention as "precautions that are taken to prevent or reduce the likelihood of a fire that may result in death, injury, or property damage, alert those in a structure to the presence of a fire in the event one occurs, better enable those threatened by a fire to survive, or to reduce the damage cause by a fire. Fire safety measures include those that are planned during the construction of a building or implemented in structures that are already standing, and those that are taught to occupants of the building."

Todays Firefighters deal with more than just the traditional idea of fire prevention. In Somers, we had far fewer house fires than automobile accidents. In 2009, as an example, Somers Fire and Rescue responded to eleven structure fires, as opposed to 203 auto accidents. Even at the seemingly small number of eleven, which included homes, businesses, garages, barns and sheds, this number is still too high. Somers Fire and Rescue has a goal of zero for each year, and has fire prevention programs in the schools and day care centers to help work toward this goal.

Automobile accidents and safe driving is a growing concern throughout the country. Each year, peoples lives are changed in just a moment of distraction, carelessness, or from an irresponsible driver driving while impaired. Somers Fire and Rescue urges all drivers to reassess their driving habits, and see if maybe each individual driver can realize that they could drive more carefully and become a safer driver. Our goal is zero accidents each year. We can achieve these goals if we work together.

About This Web Page

This web page has links to various safety organizations, as well as companies who manufacture smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. The links are primarily broken down as to type, be it home, business, children, or adult safety, as well as organizations that promote fire prevention and safety, both in private and government. Included in the information can be found tips for escape plans, buying a fire extinguisher, safety in the home, as well as coloring books, children's pages and statistics of fires and preventions. The links we have are not all complete by any means. We will add to the list as others are discovered, and some will be removed if they are found to be not in the best interests of those we are trying to reach and serve in prevention.

Somers Fire and Rescue makes no endorsements as to products or services, and receive no monetary gain for having the commercial links listed. It is with the intention that the information found may be useful in helping individuals develop a safe home or business that this page is created for.
